The Role of Coenzyme Q10 in Methylation Biochemistry

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) plays a role in methylation biochemistry by acting as a support to the antioxidant system and a cofactor for enzymes involved in methylation reactions.

CoQ10 is an important support to the antioxidant system that helps to reduce oxidative stress, which can cause DNA damage and inhibit methylation reactions. Additionally, CoQ10 is a cofactor for the enzyme methionine synthase reductase (MSR), which catalyzes the conversion of methionine synthase (MS) from an inactive form to an active form. MS is an enzyme that converts homocysteine to methionine, which is an important step in the methylation cycle.

CoQ10 also acts as a cofactor for the enzyme thymidylate synthase (TS), which catalyzes the conversion of deoxyuridine monophosphate (dUMP) to deoxythymidine monophosphate (dTMP). This enzyme is important for the biosynthesis of nucleic acids and the maintenance of DNA methylation.
